How to Lose Weight Following a Low Calorie Diet

You may already know that losing weight comes down to eating less and exercising more, but why exactly does this cause weight loss?

Food is made up of calories which are used by the body for many different processes which it must carry out. Our body is constantly burning calories, no matter how active we are. Even just sitting down and keeping the body stable is fuelled by calories, keeping the blood and heart pumping is fuelled by calories, no matter what we are doing our body is always using calories.

Different food types contain the different number of calories depending on the ingredients which it is made from. The most calorie dense foods are those which are made up of calorie dense ingredients such as sugar, starch, and fats.

The amount of calories our body uses in an average day comes down to a number of different factors such as age, weight, gender, genetics, and lifestyle. The rate in which our body burns calories is known as the "metabolism", which defines how fast our body uses calories. Typically those with a high metabolism burn more calories than those with a low metabolism.

The more physically active the body is, the more calories your body will use as it requires more fuel to move at a faster rate. For example, running burns more calories than walking as it is a more intense form of physical exercise and the body requires more calories to function.
Losing weight and gaining weight comes down to the number of calories you consume and the number of calories your body uses.

If our body does not use all available calories during daily tasks and processes within the body, it stores the excess as body fat as it has no use for them and therefore must deposit them for later usage. Body fat is essentially unspent calories which are stored within the body.
Following a diet which consists of more calories than your body burns will cause you to gain weight and body fat due to the constant calorie surplus which you are feeding the body.
If our body uses more calories than it has available through the diet, it must dig into fat stores to obtain the extra calories which it requires. This explains why a low-calorie diet is extremely important when it comes to losing weight.

MODIFYING YOUR DIET IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF LOSING WEIGHT

Just performing exercise alone will not make you lose weight if you are still consuming more calories than your body is using. This is why modifying your diet is extremely important if you want to be successful when it comes to losing weight. You should follow a low-calorie diet while still providing your body with a variety of essential nutrients to maintain optimum health and increase muscle mass. Although you can still lose weight by following an unhealthy low-calorie diet, it is not recommended as unhealthy foods are usually calorie dense therefore you will not be able to fill yourself up as easily. Healthy foods contain fewer calories, offer health benefits and fill you up more, therefore, I highly recommend sticking to a low calorie and healthy diet.
Anybody is capable of losing weight, no matter how old or overweight he or she may be. Weight loss comes down to two things - Dedication and Motivation

A Basic Guide On How To Lose Weight Healthily

The pain and difficulty of being obese can only be understood by someone who has experienced it. You can't wear your favorite dress or suit because it does not fit you. Your self-esteem and confidence are lower, often resulting in little to no progress in your life. Losing weight is the only solution to this problem, but starving yourself is not the answer. Not only it is difficult, but this is also unhealthy because there is a certain energy requirement that your body must have. Let me now tell you how to lose weight healthily.

The first step to lose weight in a healthy way is to stop thinking that not eating is the best or only way of losing weight. You can easily lose weight when you can control what you eat and not so much how much you eat. If you have already tried a fad diet then your inspiration for weight loss may be lower. With proper diet and visible results, you can be back on track soon.

The answer to the question of how to lose weight healthily becomes less difficult, instead of following a difficult diet in the typical eat and run routine is practically impossible. There are some rules of thumb regarding losing weight healthily.

- Change your lifestyle for the long-term. The habits that you are now going to start should not be for a short term. Otherwise, you will gain all your weight back again as soon as you go back to your old ways.
- Eat foods at regular interval.
- Eat foods that are rich in nutrition and very low in fat. Yes, fats taste good, but they are damaging to your body. Avoid all butter and oil as much as possible. Saturated fat should be avoided under all circumstances.
- Replace fried food with baked foods. Instead of having fried chicken, choose baked or grilled chicken. These are commonly available now and are also quite easy to make yourself.
- Eat a lot of fruits rich in water content. Some fruits need more calories to digest than what they actually add, such as apples.
- Use non-fat milk instead of regular milk. Better yet, switch to almond milk.
- Eat products made of whole grain and cut out high carbohydrate foods made of refined white flour. Choose brown rice instead of white. Use bread made from sprouted grains.
- Breakfast is an important way to start your day, so don't skip it. You can have fruits and vegetable after each 2 to 3 hours.
- Drink a lot of water. Your body uses water to flush out waste in your body. When losing weight, you are eliminating a lot of junk in your body. Drinking only lots of water helps this process along. Forget soda pop and sweet drinks, even bottled juices.
- Exercise 3 to 4 times a week. You don't have to exercise like you're going for an Olympic medal. Just get physically active and elevate your heart rate for at least 30 minutes each time.

Losing weight is a process and it doesn't have to take a long time when you do it in a healthy way. If you really want to know how to lose weight healthily then you need to know what is good for your body and what not. Diet and physical activity are important. Incorporating these into your permanent lifestyle will add quality years to your life.

The Worst Food You Can Eat If You Want a Flat Stomach

I wonder what you are all thinking, McDonald's maybe, KFC, Burger King, Pizza, Chocolate I would imagine would be the most common answers to this question. Quite surprising that these things spring to mind and are probably consumed more than most in the world today.

Being a personal trainer one of my primary aims is to educate my client's as well as the readers of my blog, on how to eat healthily. Eating healthily is one of the primary factors in determining one's health. A bad diet = bad health a good diet = good health more often than not.
So back to my headline, the worst food you can eat if you want a flat stomach. I decided to write this because many a time has people asked me what is the worst food you can eat.

Well, here it is (drum roll), the worst food you can eat is the one you can't stop eating! Read over that again if you need to. So it is not a specific food, the worst food is something which has a hold over you, a borderline addiction, something you know once the pack is opened you will struggle to stop eating it until it is all gone!

So yes the list of foods that we mentioned out of the top a lot of the time will be your worst food, for others it could be crisps or literally anything that you can't stop eating. Clearly, if the food that you can't stop eating is a fruit or a vegetable it will pose less of a problem than popcorn or ice cream.

I have experienced it myself when eating a big bag of crisps for example, for the duration of the pack you are having a constant mental battle with the crisps! At the start you think you'll just have a few, a bit more than few in you think 'I'll work extra hard tomorrow don't worry' before you know it you are 3/4s of the way in and you think 'there's no point in leaving this many' and the bag is gone.
How can you avoid this?

The first thing I would say does not stock your cupboards with this certain product. It is a lot easier to resist temptation when the nearest pack is in Tesco rather than the kitchen!
If you have kids you don't want to feed them something you wouldn't eat yourself. So try and avoid the team trips to McDonald's because you are more than likely to dig in yourself.

Make a list of the top 3 foods which really hold you back from your nutritional goals and limit them dramatically. Yes, they do taste great, that's why they can be so irresistible to some people but if you want to be healthy and achieve that flat belly look which many people strive for, then sacrifices need to be made.
So find your worst food and send it packing!

3 Tips To Simplify Healthy Eating

With so much conflicting advice out there about the "best" way to eat, people are often more confused than ever about how to go about eating a healthy diet.
Countless experts all offer opposing viewpoints about eating for fat loss, longevity, or just all around good health. But sometimes, the best solution is to go with tried and true approaches that keep it simple.

To make things easy, I present 3 stupid-simple tips to eating healthier:

1. Eat Mostly Whole Foods in Moderation"If man made it, don't eat it" - Jack LaLanne
It doesn't matter what diet book you read, almost all of them agree that whole foods from nature are much better for health than processed foods made in a factory. It doesn't take a genius to realize that potatoes are better than french fries or water is better than soft drinks.
Simplifying Whole Food Eating:
Think about substitutions rather than restrictions. Eating fruit instead of a candy bar, water instead of a soft drink, and a side salad rather than french fries are an easy way to get started.

Tip 2: Think about practicality vs. ideologySo many people are trying to find the perfect diet, they forget about whether or not they can actually follow it. Be realistic about your lifestyle and your commitments, and then find strategies to make healthy eating work with your lifestyle rather than against it.
If someone recommends counting every single calorie you consume, but that's not practical, you may want to consider an alternative approach.
I personally recommend finding simple healthy recipes and meals you know you can make at any time. Cooking in bulk is another great time-saving strategy that can make healthy eating a lot easier.
You can make a commitment to learning one new recipe every week that only takes 5 minutes to prepare. That way you build up a solid foundation of meals you can turn to when you want something quick and easy.

Tip 3: Consistency is KeySometimes people get so stressed out about what they "should" or "shouldn't" be eating they end up giving up altogether.
The ironic thing is that stress can do more harm than many unhealthy foods!
A person's results come not just from what they do, but from what they do consistently.
I eat many foods that aren't the healthiest and have the occasional "cheat meal." I can still stay lean and healthy because the vast majority of the time I eat a great diet. Then when I do have something a little less healthy, I'm not worried about it because I know my body can handle it on occasion.

So instead of worrying yourself to death, focus on sticking with healthy habits 80-90% of the time, and you'll find it's a lot easier to stick with over a lifetime.

The Simplest Diet Summary:
Eat a whole food diet and plenty of plant foods and greens
Keep your portions under control (eat until you're about 80% full)
Find ways to make whole food eating practical and easy in your life.
Relax! It's just food. Focus on consistently engaging in good behaviors 80-90% of the time making them habits.

Healthy Cooking for Weight Loss - Steamer

The first step in healthy cooking for weight loss is to stock the kitchen. Clearly, if you do not buy the correct ingredients for a healthy diet you will not be able to do the healthy cooking for weight loss. These should include fruits, vegetables, healthy meats, grains, cereals, spices, and favourers.

My favorite way to cook is with a steamer. I am a man who lives alone and I am very lazy when it comes to preparing food. At present, I have a Steamer, which for me is the best cooking invention ever. This is the healthy cooking for weight loss ultimate utility.
The benefits of steam cooking are: The food tastes amazing
You cannot burn it. This is a huge plus for me, the expert at burning anything.
The food maintains its moisture, no dry shriveled vegetables.
If you have a steamer like me and not pots that you put on the stove, then it is a setup and leaves operation. If the water runs out the steamer turns off.
The food cooks fast, generally around half an hour without any user intervention.
It cooks all foods and without any defrosting. I put the frozen chicken directly into the steamer and add a couple of minutes to the cooking time.
The food maintains its nutritional value as it is not leached out by standing in water.
The cooking time is much faster than boiling so the nutrients are not destroyed by prolonged heating.

I am a little lazy as a 'chef' and just have everything in at once. I have three layers to the steamer. The first layer I have the rice as it takes the longest, it does restrict the amount of steam rising through the system but it catches the drippings from the chicken so that nutrition and taste are not lost. The next layer is the chicken as it takes longer than the vegetables. If you like the vegetables crispy 'al dente' then add them a little later.
The way it works is as follows:
It is known as moist-heat cooking. Steam is water in its gas state. It contains it contains two types of energy. The normal energy due to the temperature and something called latent heat, the energy required to change from a gas to a liquid. Steam at 100 degrees Celsius has more energy than water at 100 degrees Celsius. Because of this steam cooking is faster than boiling.
I hope this is an inspiration for you too start health cooking for weight loss.

Reward Without Food

A few years ago, I was working on my computer and I heard my son approaching, whining about how bored he was. Obviously, RTEM (Repetitive Television Eye Motion caused when you don't move your butt off the couch for hours) had hit the critical phase. I was unconsciously trying to soothe him and old connections in my mind surfaced. "Let me finish this one little thing," I offered. "Then I'll take you out for an ice cream."

You would have thought I'd suggested jail. Flailing his arms and stamping his feet, he screamed:

"I don't want an ice cream! Food's no fun. I want something fun - like a car!"

Now, before I go too much further, let me explain that he was 8 years old and it was a TOY car he wanted. I cringe to think about hearing that statement when he's 16!

However, he had a point.

Not everyone rewards every little thing in their lives with food (and cars are more fun than food!)

This is a principle I have been refining for years as I struggled time and time again to keep my body weight under control and my overall health at a good level. At this point, it stands as one component among many of the Catalyst Weight Loss System. The concept of rewarding yourself with food is a common block that must change.

You know how it goes: a bad day at work, traffic jams, doing a particularly nasty job around the house, dealing with an overbearing person, a bad night's sleep. Whoops, time for a treat.

Changing Habits

Habits die hard and, if you are rewarding yourself with food, you have probably been doing it for a very long time. We also know that trying to simply abandon bad habits is not easy to do. In fact, it may be downright impossible to approach habits with that mindset.

The most successful way to work with habits is to play with them. Watch yourself closely to see what feels like a reward and what doesn't. Probably 90 percent of rewarding yourself with food actually feels like punishment - after you've eaten that pint of ice cream and the guilt sets in, do you really feel rewarded?

Try substituting new and different rewards for those old ones. Do it gradually, quietly and don't expect immediate results. Identify one particular "reward moment." Is it Friday night when the work week is over? Is it Saturday afternoon after the house has been thoroughly cleaned? I once counted 16 times I felt I needed a reward and it wasn't even a work day!

What do you really like? If it's something you love, that might be an appropriate reward, especially if you rarely get to do it. If you typically eat ice cream AND read a book (or watch a movie), try separating the two events. Is it just a habit that you eat when you give yourself time to read? Would a cup of tea be nice at those times? Again, the substitution will work much better than the simple abandonment of the old habit.

Giving Yourself Gifts

You may think that it sounds expensive to give yourself "gifts" but have you ever stopped to think about how much some food costs? Especially "reward" food? I know a woman who stopped buying expensive coffee drinks every afternoon at work and quickly saved enough for a new wardrobe! She said she gave up an immediate reward for a bigger reward she'd been wanting for years.

As you lose weight, it's often very productive to give yourself rewards along the way for each weight loss goal you reach. There is a wide range of wonderful rewards that do not involve food you can give yourself for reaching health and fitness goals. Pick rewards that do not interfere with your diet, nutrition or exercise plans. Rewarding yourself in a healthy fashion will ultimately help you stay motivated to continue making steady progress towards your weight loss goals.
